The NAGN formally came into being with the promulgation of the National Art Gallery of Namibia Act 14 of 2000. The National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) is a state-owned art gallery the goal of this institution is to preserve and encourage art in Namibia.The NAGN is a national museum, housing the NAGN Permanent Collection and the Arts Association Heritage Trust Permanent Collection. The NAGN also hosts contemporary exhibitions of Regional, National and International Art. It displays in a permanent exhibition of Namibian, African and European Art. Exhibitions of local artists such as e.g. Uli Aschenborn are also held. As of 2018 Snobia Kaputu is the Chief Executive Officer of the Gallery. Between 2012 and 2017 Hercules Viljoen was the Director.
