The Commonwealth Graves or former known as Old Windhoek Cemetery is the oldest cemetery for the military and white settlers in Windhoek. The cemetery was established in 1892, It consists of two sections on either side of Robert Mugabe Avenue. The eastern section was used first, in 1912, while the western section added in 1904 was used after that. Soldiers who died during the early Nama and Herero wars, officials of the German administration, early settlers, and civilians, including members of the Witbooi clan, lie buried in the Eastern section. In 1904 there were almost no more plots available in the Eastern section of the cemetery and the Western side was developed. Several soldiers are buried there, including troops from the Union of South Africa and German whose deaths resulted from World War 1.
