Although it is not known when exactly it was first used, it is the oldest cemetery in Windhoek. It is situated next to the present day Hochland Road, the Gammams cemetery lies on the South side of Hochland Park. It officially dates to the time of the Herero rebellion of 1904. Some Herero tribesmen who were court-martialed and executed for their participation in the rebellion were buried there. One such person was Zacahrias Kukuri, a supreme commander who aided chief Samuel Maharero’s forces on 18 April 1905. By 1923 the cemetery was almost full. On 4 November 1926 Ehrenfield Ngaujake was the last person to be buried there. The cemetery was no longer used although it was only officially closed on 1 December 1964.
