CoW allocates 7.7 million for stadium upgrade -

The City of Windhoek has allocated N$ 7.7 million in the 2024/25 budget for the refurbishment of Sam Nujoma Stadium. This was revealed by Samuel Mutonga, Acting Strategic Executive for Finance and Customer Services during a public meeting on Sunday (14/07/24) in Katutura East Constituency. The City has already spent N$ 3.2 million during the 2013/14 financial year on a feasibility study for the upgrade of the stadium.

Presenting key capital projects outlined in the proposed 2024/25 budget awaiting approval from the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Mutonga highlighted that the City secured an N$ 80 million loan for the acquisition of prepaid water meters to enhance water consumption management among residents. Furthermore, N$ 5.3 million has been earmarked for the procurement of additional firefighting vehicles and equipment.

Addressing concerns over the City’s billing system discrepancies, Mutonga clarified that forensic auditors have been appointed to investigate affected accounts and assess the impact on municipal operations. He noted that the residents have the right to access their municipal statements, verify consumption details, and seek clarification on any discrepancies.

Responding to community queries about delays in obtaining business fitness certificates, Frieda Mbenzi, Section Head for Business Registration, outlined the mandatory annual renewal requirement for all businesses operating in Windhoek. She acknowledged that there are delays in the business registration processes, which she attributes to the City only having one point of registration, which is Customer Care at the head office. Mbenzi indicated that there are ongoing efforts to develop an online application system to address these delays.

Regarding community requests for speed humps in specific areas, Larry Mwikanda, Manager: Building Control, advised residents to formally apply through the Constituency Office, City of Windhoek Customer Care, or directly to the Building Control Division. The process involves submitting a request letter detailing the location and reasons for needing speed humps, followed by on-site assessments by engineers, and then installing the viable speed humps, depending on the funds availability

The meeting was attended by the Regional Councillor for Katutura East Constituency Richard !Gaoseb and local authority Councillors, Ndeshihafela Larandja and Magdalena Lombardt.
