The City of Windhoek is taking significant steps towards ensuring the safety of pedestrians by installing pedestrian rails along the main roads in Windhoek.”This project aims to restrict illegal road crossings, guide pedestrians to nearby crossing opportunities, and ultimately reduce pedestrian fatalities along arterial roads,” said Horst Lisse, Chief Engineer: Planning, Design & Traffic Flow at the City of Windhoek.

The project, which is being implemented in phases, focuses on two key areas within the city, namely: Independence Avenue (Katutura), where rails will be installed from Hans Uirab Street up to Abraham Mashego Street and Mandume Ndemufayo Road in the central business district, where rails will be installed between Fidel Castro Street and Sam Nujoma Drive.

The rails will serve as visual cues for pedestrians, indicating safe crossing points and encouraging the use of designated areas. The project is part of initiatives that aim to encourage alternative modes of transportation in Windhoek.
